my brain hurts whenever i find out that meat-eating people cannot make the connection between steak and living animal that was killed.
i mean, seriously. i get that they're all so used to buying and eating meat that they don't ever think that that piece of meat used to be a living cow or pig or whatever, but COME ON!

seriously. i honesty think that this goes fairly well along with "i LOOOOVE animals!" and then they eat them. i used to live basically in the countryside and i've seen plenty of people getting their eyes wet by cuteness at the sight of cows or piggies or bunnies, only to go back home and eat meat for dinner.
i myself was one of them, but i was also young and stupid. once i actually stopped and thought about the connection, there was no way i could eat a dead rabbit or cow anymore :\ i mean, the mere thought that they used to have a mother and father, or that they had 'kids', or that they had eyes to look at the world with, definitely stops me from eating meat even though i do like meat, always have, and still get cravings.

Uh, yeah, that's pretty fail-worthy. IMO, if you're going to have meat, it's far more humane to go and hunt and kill the animal than to buy meat from these large mass-production farms.

yeah, i mean, you'd be much less of a hypocrite - at least you wouldn't be lying to yourself thinking that hey - it's not like you hurt the animal yourself (you just hired somebody to do it for you!)!

I think it goes beyond that too. Animals on those gigantic mass-production farms are treated very badly. They live their lives in misery until they are killed for the meat that gets packaged and shipped to our grocery stores. It's really very sickening. At least if you hunt and kill the animal it has lived a natural life in its wild habitat.

I think the biggest problem is that kids grow up just having the meat all prepared so they don't even associate it with the animals. Have you noticed there are types of meat having names that have nothing to do with the animal, like "hamburger" or "steak" or "drumsticks" ... it's no wonder people think meat just magically appears in the supermarket and has nothing to do with animals, lol.

yeah, agreed on all points (even though i still think that if you can manage to eat without killing any animal, you should do that - i mean, if i'm lost in the wilderness and i can feed on plants, i wouldn't kill a rabbit just because it'd fill me up sooner or because it tastes better than whatever vegetable i could find). i believe that if parents put some steak on a kids plate and told them "you can eat it if you want, but remember this was once a baby cow with a mother and a father just like you" the kid won't be so happy to eat that.
